    Details

In the old days, in early or mid July by the lunar calendar, scholar called seonbi held a poem-writing party amid the beautiful natural scenery around Buyongdae Cliff, and also enjoyed boat rides, fireworks, and egg-fire. In all, they composed these activities into Seonyujulbul Nori. Around the season, not only scholars in Hahoe but also poets from the neighborhood got together. They rode boats up the river to the Rock of Brothers, and in the middle of the river, they anchored their boat and enjoyed drinks. Meanwhile, hundreds of pieces of mulberry root charcoal begin to burn on the thick rope extending from Buyongdae Cliff to the Mansongjeong Pine Tree Forest. The dim light from burning charcoal fends off darkness: this is called julbul. On the surface of the river from Gyeomamjeongsa Building o Okyeonjeongsa Building, hundreds of eggshells with a piece of cotton burning inside it float down slowly. They are said to look like lotus flowers and therefore were called Yeonhwa. At the same time, scholars on the boat write and read poems along with dancing and singing. On the river, they place a gourd bowl containing a burning wad of cotton. Then they play a game of writing poems until the bowl reaches the deep water in front of Okyeonjeongsa Building. If anyone finished writing a poem before the gourd bowl reached the place, the rest of the people would shout “Drop the fires!” in unison. At their shout, people on the top of Buyongdae Cliff set fire to the bundles of dried pine trees prepared and begin to drop them down the cliff. The pine trees bump against the cliff, making brilliant flames and falling into the river. All these create a grand sight. These activities were discontinued in the 1930s. But these days they have been revived and reenacted during the annual Andong Mask Dance Festival.
